Frequently asked questions
Gallery Guide to Auto Detailing & Car Protection
How often should I detail my car?
For real protection, a full professional detail every 1–3 months is the standard. Even if you park indoors or don't drive often, contaminants, UV rays, and dust accumulate on paint constantly. Vehicles with ceramic coatings can go longer between full details but still benefit from regular maintenance washes to keep the coating performing at its best.
Do you detail non-luxury and daily driver vehicles?
Yes. We work on everything from daily commuters and family SUVs to exotics and hypercars. Every vehicle gets the same level of care and precision regardless of make or value. If you drive it, we'll detail it properly.
What's the difference between auto detailing and a regular car wash?
A regular car wash removes surface dirt. Auto detailing goes deeper — paint decontamination, interior cleaning, glass treatment, wheel care, and paint correction if needed. The result is a show-quality finish that a drive-through wash simply can't produce. At Collective Detailing in Irvine, every detail is performed inside our climate-controlled facility with professional-grade products.
How do I maintain my ceramic coating?
Proper maintenance is what separates a 2-year coating from a 7-year one. Follow these rules:
Wait 7 full days after application before washing
Use only pH-neutral shampoos — harsh soaps strip the coating
Wash with microfiber mitts and towels only
Never use automatic brush car washes — they destroy coatings and clearcoat
Apply a ceramic maintenance spray every 3–4 months
Park in shade or under cover when possible
Remove bird droppings, tree sap, and bug splatter immediately — they etch paint fast
Bring your vehicle to us for periodic professional maintenance inspections to keep the coating performing at its peak.
What are dealership ceramic coatings and are they worth it?
Dealership ceramic coatings are almost always a paint warranty product, not a professional-grade coating. They're applied quickly without proper surface preparation, which means the coating can't bond correctly or deliver lasting protection. The warranty covers certain defects but doesn't prevent chips, scratches, or UV fading — it's insurance, not protection. At Collective Detailing, every ceramic coating package starts with full decontamination and paint correction before a single drop of coating touches your paint.
When is the best time to get ceramic coating?
The best time is when your paint is in its cleanest, most corrected state — ideally on a brand-new car straight from the dealer, or after a professional paint correction on a used vehicle. Don't wait until paint is scratched, oxidized, or faded. Coating over damaged paint locks the damage in permanently. The earlier you protect, the more value you get out of the investment.
How can I tell if my car already has a ceramic coating?
A properly coated car has paint that feels extremely slick to the touch, beads water instantly on contact, and sheds dirt more easily after washing. If your paint doesn't behave this way, it's likely uncoated or the previous coating has degraded. Bring it in and we'll inspect the surface and advise on next steps.
Should I get PPF or ceramic coating — or both?
They protect against different things and work best together.
Paint Protection Film (PPF) is physical armor — a thick, self-healing film that absorbs rock chips, road debris, and scratches on high-impact zones like the hood, bumper, and fenders. SunTek PPF carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Ceramic coating is a chemical shield — it repels contaminants, blocks UV, adds deep gloss, and makes washing dramatically easier. Our packages last 3 to 7+ years.
The best protection stack is PPF on impact zones with ceramic coating over everything else. We install both at our Irvine facility and offer combination packages.
How long does ceramic coating last?
With proper prep and maintenance, ceramic coatings last 3 to 7+ years depending on the package. Our 3-year Standard, 5-year Premium, and 7-year+ Signature packages are each applied in a climate-controlled environment after full decontamination and paint correction — which is what allows them to bond correctly and hit their rated lifespan. Neglecting maintenance washes or using harsh products will shorten any coating's life significantly.
Can I wash my car after ceramic coating?
You must wait a minimum of 7 days after application before washing to allow the coating to fully cure. After that, use pH-neutral shampoo, microfiber mitts, and hand wash or touchless car wash only. No brush washes, no drive-throughs. Following this process keeps your coating intact and performing for its full rated lifespan.
Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?
Ceramic coating adds hardness to your paint's surface and helps resist light swirl marks from washing, minor abrasions, and chemical etching. It does not protect against rock chips or deep scratches — that's what PPF is for. Think of ceramic coating as your UV and chemical defense layer, and PPF as your physical impact armor. Together they cover every threat your paint faces.
How long does a detailing appointment take?
A full interior and exterior detail typically takes 2–4 hours depending on vehicle size and condition. Ceramic coating packages take 1–2 days including decontamination and correction. PPF installations vary by package — front-end coverage typically takes 1 day, full-body takes 2–3 days. We give you a clear timeline when you book so you can plan accordingly.
Can old or failing ceramic coating be removed?
Yes. Paint correction safely strips degraded or improperly applied coatings and restores the paint surface to a clean, corrected state ready for a fresh install. If your existing coating is failing, peeling, or was poorly applied in the first place, don't coat over it — have it properly removed first. We handle this as part of our paint correction process in Irvine.
What maintenance is required after PPF or ceramic coating?
For ceramic coating: pH-neutral shampoo, microfiber wash tools, no brush car washes, and a ceramic maintenance spray every 3–4 months.
For PPF: gentle hand washing, avoid high-pressure spray directly at film edges, and inspect edges periodically for lifting. Do not use abrasive compounds or polish on PPF.
Both surfaces benefit from regular professional inspections to catch any issues early before they affect the coating or film bond.
Do you offer mobile detailing?
No. Every service we offer — ceramic coating, PPF, paint correction, and detailing — is performed exclusively inside our indoor, climate-controlled facility in Irvine. Mobile detailing doesn't provide the dust-free, temperature-stable environment required for professional coating and film installs. If you're outside our area, contact us and we can recommend next steps.
